Modification parse error smf 1.1.4

I am using SMF 1.1.4 fresh install.  I tried adding the gallery but despite trying to add temp folders in the package folder and chmoding it to 777 I still get the error.  I have tried to manual install but get a white page.  Any help would be appreciated.

Does it not work with 1.1.4 ??  Its a fresh forum with only TP installed even uninstalling TP I still get the white page.

It should work fine with 1.1.4 no changes since 1.1.3
