I've been looking for something like SMF, but I need to be able to add custom fields to the user information and have other users be able to search on it (like, list all members with field XXX set to true).

Also, I'd like to have user member groups if possible, so users can add themselves to group AAA and send emails to that group only, go to their special forum, etc.

Can SMF do that without extensive PHP modification?

Are you talking about the simple machines forum software? Currently there is no built in option for custom profile fileds. There is a mod but you will not be able to search for them.

Most of those requests requires mods.
