Is there a way to to have the gallery post something on the forum index that there is a new picture to see?

You mean like under recent posts?
I have a mod for SMF Gallery Pro which will show recent images under recent posts.

And also have another mod to show the latest four images on top of the forum if you wish.

Yes,

      I was just looking for something on the index of the forum that states there was a new picture added today and/or by(userxxx). One of the 2 you suggested would be fine.
