Hi again, it's your friendly neighborhood guy-with-too-many-ideas.

SMF Status Update...

On my own forums, I added a custom profile field to be displayed on posts just above the signature.

I named the field "I am:" wrapped it in a DIV with styling and this was the result...

I also put a dumb smiley and the words "I am..." before the field content.

As you can see, it's basically a little spot that functions like a Twitter or Facebook "status update".

People can go to their profile, fill in the "I am:" box, and it displays what they are doing.

Like the owner of this site might have: "I am... Working on the next mod for SMFHacks."

I was all happy with that as it was, but then I realized something.

People are probably very rarely going to actually edit their profile just to update their status.

There should be a current status box on the main page of the forum! That way anyone could update their status quickly and easily from the front page or what have you.

So basically, this is sort of a suggestion but also sort of a "take what I did and make it better" sort of thing, if you want to.

There could also be factors for admins like setting who can or can't update statuses, who can or can't see the statuses, which pages display the status update field (just main page, or all forum pages?) etc. etc.

This would have all sorts of applications. If you're running the Classifieds mod, people could put "I am... Selling a new bike in the classifieds section. Check it out." without actually having to edit it into their signature.

It'd be easy to update users about your actions on the fly, etc.

That's all!

Isn't this available in the Social Media mods?

If you mean this, please note the many differences.
