I opened up our downloads so 'guest' could download now too with a limit of three downloads a day with two minutes wait time.

When you right click on the download button and 'copy link' you get (in this example) a link like this.

http://appliancejunk.com/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=downfile&id=410;t=1327775371

If that link gets posted in another forum people can download without ever visiting out download page at this link.

http://appliancejunk.com/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=410

I have hotlink protection turned on in cpanel, but that does not seem to stop anyone from being able to download using the first link I posted above.

How can I protect our downloads so they can only be downloaded by using the download button that is on our site?

Thanks,

One of two ways can check reffeer but not sure how reiable that would be.

Second I could check in the session. If they have not visited the downloads system in x amount of time. Redirect to the download page first.

Ok, On another note...

I just checked the boxes for

Show Direct Link Code
Show Html Link Code

to see how it displayed the code on the download page.

Then I unchecked them and when I view the download page now the download button is gone!

Made an update that may help for hotlink protection
2.1.1
+Added setting to deny access to search engines to download file to prevent indexing/resource usage.
+Added setting for basic hotlink protection

I have enabled the hotlink protection and installed the latest update yet users can still right click the download button and copy the link which means they are not using any credits when downloading files.

Credits should be used no matter what so if they either use the download button or the normal textlink credits will be used.
