Changing the Rating System

How difficult would it be to change the rating scale to something like 1-10 instead of the 5 star system?

My old phpBB gallery used a drop-down instead of stars and the rating scale was configurable. I was thinking of digging into the code to modify it, but given the star-based interface, I suspect I might be opening a big can of worms.
