I can't seem to uninstall it using the package manager, so what's the easiest way to completely remove the trader system manually?

Use this link. Upload the trader mod
http://www.smfhacks.com/smf-package-parser.html
It will tell you what files to edit.

aha!!!!  that's freaking awesome. you're my new best friend.  i've seen the parser referred to, but never knew what it did.  the sky is bluer, and the grass is greener now.
