I must admit that an option to have all thumbs and medium images stored as jpegs of a defined compression would be a nice feature.
At them moment my setup is using imagemagik rather than gd for the thumb creation (memory issues) and I do find that the medium images are a bit too compressed (when upped as jpegs) and that the medium images are a bit on the large side (when upped as png's - though look nice).
The option for admin to alter the way the thumbs are created during upload would be a nice feature to enhance and already great product.
