Hi everyone, if you've used Google images recently, they've begun to hotlink every image they crawl so that the person looking up images on Google Search doesn't have to visit the website that is actually hosting the image. This has decreased traffic to my site by quite a lot compared to last year. I currently host over 10 000 high quality science-related diagrams, photos, etc. in my SMF gallery.

I found this article on how to protect from this sort of hotlinking Google has implemented. I would like to know if anyone has fought back and implemented some of the changes outlined below in the article.

According to the article, Wordpress developers have already developed mods that prevent this sort of hotlinking. So, images that image in Google Search look like this:

Anyway of accomplishing this on my Apache server? :-[ Keep in mind that I do not want to block search engines from crawling my images. All I want is something like what fanshare has done (see example; try clicking an image).

Willing to pay for a solution

This seems to be important to implement. I support the need for this change.

I could add code to the gallery pages to prevent them from being indexed by search engines.

No!! SMFHacks, that's a terrible idea :-\

We want them to be indexed, otherwise there is no point to a gallery. Gallery adds traffic to the website. Google has caused a slow down of traffic as a result of their stupid change.

We just want something that does this:

First: Visit this link -- https://www.google.com/search?q=site:fansshare.com&hl=en&tbm=isch&biw=1280&bih=675&sei=n1vQUfvoM5THywHb7oCACg

Second: Try to view a picture in the search.

Notice, it will say "Click for full resolution"

That's what we want :)

Will pay, just name a fair price.

That does not seem like something I can control with the gallery but seems to be on google's end

Read your linked article from the post. That is not an easy thing to do will take a good amount of time on my end.

What needs to be done is when a person uploads an image, smf gallery creates a carbon copy of that image with a dark shade on top of it. So, not only is the original uploaded, it's also copied with a different file name with that dark shade.

I don't know.

Is there a money value that would convince you? Traffic is the most important thing for webmasters. That's the whole point of having an SMF gallery in my opinion.

It would probably take about 3 to 4 hours of work at least and half my normal rate of $50 an hour. Since I have to do it for both SMF versions/testing etc.

Also it would not affect any current images already indexed unless we somehow setup an apache rule.
