Title: Arcade system dead or re-incarnation.
Post by: Zaphod on March 18, 2021, 02:15:33 pm
Hi all hope you are all well, Having had the Arcade games on my clan forum and now dead due to no more flash, I was thinking if there are any decompilers etc to convert them to html5 and or if the Arcade system would either now or later support html5 games?

I see that it is no longer listed here so I suspect (unless I missed it) that it is no longer being supported. So not sure if this would be a viable project or not?

Have fun, stay curious.

You can get most arcade games to work with ruffle.js  I enabled it on my sites.

You can get ruffle version of SMF Arcade at https://web-develop.ca/

Wow thank you Vbgamer, I really thought for a time that this great project was doomed and just a blast from the past.

This is going to keep the project going and saving myself from re-working about 8 games I wrote in Flash, as for the 150 or so games I have on my Clan website, it would be wrong for me to de-compile and re-work them as I am not the original author and do not have permission to do so.

For anyone who is interested the origins of flash games arcade has a strong sentimental value for myself and the gaming clan I am a founder of, TLDR at the bottom.

We formed in 2002 as a result of inter arguing (where have we seen that before) that caused several players to leave and form a new gamer clan, as we did not expect to grow and wanted a home-base to connect, we secured a Yahoo groups name and used that for two years when one of the three original founders said "lets have a proper website" I built one using M$oft's front page in Windows 3.11 (WFWG) all in html and one of the other original founders put a couple of flash games up as a distraction/amusement.

Originally when we went PHP we used PHPBB it was OK for a while but was unable to keep out comment spammers very effectively (at that time) and I took over the forum and researched some systems and came up with SMF, version 0.08 or 7. Have been with SMF since 2005 and it's been a wild ride ever since. So due to the loss of a founder who loved the small amount of flash games we had at the time, the E-Arcade project was and will be again dear to the original members hearts. I think it's the support of SMF and it's third party partners that has kept SMF what it is today, I expect there are other just as good systems but I am a firm believer of "If it ain't broke don't fix it", although at times it came close.

TLDR: Used flash games on website and the loss of flash threatened E-Arcade system, but now a new lease of life.

Have fun, stay curious.

Yeah ruffle works great. Example game with SMF Arcade https://www.support.smfnew.com/index.php?action=arcade;sa=play;game=2
And I use on projectxonline.net from one my original sites since i thought a flash site was cool at the time.

I started with phpBB myself then tried out IPB then that went paid then went to SMF.
