I'll make it clear right up front that I'm totally new to SMF, so I'm expecting that this will be a faceslap moment when some kind soul answers me.

I installed the SMF Articles mod successfully (no errors and I can bring up the Articles Configuration screen); however, it doesn't appear to have done anything anywhere else. I can't see how to use it.

What am I missing to make this work?

I'm having the same problem as the person in post #8. I've installed it, I see Articles Configuration in the admin section. However, I cannot figure out how to do anything with it. Are there some instructions somewhere? I'm brand new to SMF.

Your article page cannot be viewed by guests.

Anywho, make sure you have permissions set.

and for SEO i created a robots.txt file and added the following:

User-Agent: *
Allow: /index.php?action=links
Allow: /index.php?action=resources
Allow: /index.php?action=gallery
Allow: /index.php?action=forum
Allow: /index.php
Allow: /index.php?action=membermap
Allow: /index.php?action=store
Allow: /archive.php
Allow: /index.php?page=133
Allow: /index.php?action=decals
Allow: /index.php?page=163
Allow: /index.php?action=articles

make sure this file is created in your public_html

anyways,.....google and yahoo have listed all these pages for me in the web.

What ended up solving it for me was editing the index template file for the Babylon theme to add another function button and creating a button for the Articles section.

Hi - I'm sorry if Im doing this wrong - or in the wrong place, but I'm kind of overwhelmed at this site (lots of stuff here!).  Anyway...

I installed articles (awesome, thank you!!!) and it's working fine except:

a) members can't delete comments from their own articles
b) I can't add blocks to the articles pages like I can to the gallery pro and other areas of the site/forum.  help!

Thanks!!!

Tell you what would be a great addition to SMF Articles, (for me anyway) and that would be the ability to add attachements to the articles. The mod seems to use just the standard posting system for SMF but without the "Additional Options" bit at the bottom. On our site we are trying to use SMF Articles to create "How To" guides, location information and techniques for photographers so being able to add images as attachments would be a godsend. We already have the "Inline Attachments" mod in the forum which allows us to put images in particular places in forum posts and the "inline" dropdown actually appears on the screen when writing aticles but the attachment browse field at the bottom doesn't.

Is there anyway the attachment bit could be added.

I would like to have the option to display select articles on my simple portal page.

Also, got a bug.
SMF Articles and SimplePortal Articles are conflicting with each other. When I go to SimplePortal / Articles it redirects me to the SMF Article Admin Panel.
Got a fix?
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles

What ended up solving it for me was editing the index template file for the Babylon theme to add another function button and creating a button for the Articles section.

I was hoping this would solve my problem too, but all I can get is a square with a red x and "home" text because I copied the code from my "home" button and installed in the array.

I too created the new "Articles" button, named it like the download, and dropped it into the "English" bucket with the rest of my buttons. I'm using the Extreme6 theme, so that's where I made my adjustments.
No luck. Even though I have the Articles Configuration page, and the Page Management Mod to add another page, I'm having trouble connecting the dots.

I would sure appreciate some pointers.

Thanks in advance.

Can you post the code that are using to add this button?
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles
Post by: Cowboy Logic on March 24, 2009, 03:50:09 pm
This is the code I copied from my first button:

Quote
        // Show the [home] button.
                  echo '<li><a href="', $scripturl, '" class="kwick opt1">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/home.png" alt="' . $txt[103] . '" style="margin: 0px 0;" border="0" /><span>' : $txt[103]), '</span></a></li>';

I edited to look like this:

Quote
        // Show the [Atricles] button.
                  echo '<li><a href="', $scripturl, '" class="kwick opt1">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/article.gif" alt="' . $txt[103] . '" style="margin: 0px 0;" border="0" /><span>' : $txt[103]), '</span></a></li>';

The results are a box with a red x, and an alternate text of "home" instead of Articles.

Also, if simply try to view the page via URL, I get a "Hacking Attempt" message.
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles
Post by: SMFHacks on March 24, 2009, 06:52:19 pm
Should be
Code: [Select]
  echo '<li><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=articles" class="kwick opt1">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/article.gif" alt="' . $txt[103] . '" style="margin: 0px 0;" border="0" /><span>' : 'Articles'), '</span></a></li>';

You also need to create an image called articles.gif in themes/default/images/english
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles
Post by: Cowboy Logic on March 24, 2009, 07:27:01 pm
;D Perfect. Thank you. I already had the image created, but only in the theme folder, I dropped it into the default folder and my new Articles section is steaming on.

I did rename the image to a PNG to match the rest however, and changed it in your code sample.

Thanks again.

... I'll be back. I need a store.

How would the anchor bbcode work with this? I'm attempting to interlink between articles, specifically anchored portions of others, using:

[anchor=*test]test[/*anchor]

and

[url*=http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=303586.0#post_test]go to test[/*url]

What would be the substitute for post or am I reading this wrong? (Ignore the astericks.)

ETA: Ah, nevermind, it is treated as regular posts. :)

This has had me going in circles for a couple of days. I'm sure I'm just overlooking the most simple of things, but I would really appreciate the help. I am simply trying to embed a code, the I use in the forum and other places in the site, for a media player in an article. I use articles for posting interviews, and this is an audio interview with Lloyd Kaufman. It's a bit of a pointless page when the roughly 40 visitors, so far, can only see a white box and a description of what's supposed to be there :D The video(which is actually just audio here, but it's used other places for video) just isn't loading or something. The code will embed on any other site, just not SMF Articles. All I get is a white box where a media player should be. Any ideas?
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles
Post by: SMFHacks on July 08, 2009, 07:49:15 am
If it is an html code it will not work. The articles system supports bbc code only. There are mods for SMF that allow embedded bbc code of movies/videos that would work with the articles.

I'd like to use SMF Articles, but for a different purpose....  I'd like to have an online listing of books.

Would it be possible to add 4 or 5 Admin definable fields that could be used for the Book title, Author, Publisher, ISBN number etc.

And also would it be possible to add the ability to add one or two photos so that the book covers could be shown?

Although I specifically want to list books, I'm sure these additions would make it much more flexible for all sorts of uses...

Regards
Eddy

This would be a great added feature for me as well.
Along with two other site owners I've been trying to setup a 'recipe book' for some time now on my site and theirs.
You can see my mod request on SMF HERE (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=306290.0).

This articles mod is already good, adding a few features like this would make it even better.  ;D

I am new, and I read this thread back and forth many times, but I still couldn't find the answer for one of the users:  After successfully installed the mod, what (how) am I going to do with it?

There is no detail explanation of how to bring up the articles page.

I know that someone has mentioned about setting the permission, but where, which file?
Thanks MUCH in advanced for any helps

As you can see on my web site that there is "article" button any where.
How do I about to get it up to the screen, or I have to create it manually?
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles

For SMF 1.1.x for custom themes you have to manually edit the index.template.php and look for the template_menu function to add a menu item/link to the articles section.

Issue isn't fix with version 1.3.2a

I'm running SMF 2.0 RC3 and SMF Articles 1.3.2a, When logged in as admin, on the main article category page is an [EDIT] link..
When I try to edit a category, it erases the description from the text box.. Everything saves ok, form is just not populating the textarea. Is there a fix for this ?
Thanks..

Hi SMFHacks,

We're going to use your article system too! Already translated it into Dutch...
2 small questions:

1) Is it possible to add an option to enable/disable the menu button? In first place I'll comment it out because we don't want to use this Article button.
1a) Where do I need to comment it out? I cant find it....  ??? Found it: subs.php
2) How can I display an article on the frontpage of our website? You said that Articles isn't using SSI.....

Thanks,
Vincent

just the same thing that i want to ask 8)
the frontpage. that would be a nice option.
its much better  than the simple machines articles.
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles
Post by: SMFHacks on April 29, 2010, 03:58:40 pm
1. Not sure how much of use that would be since most people would need to access the articles somehow.

2. SSI methods are not currently built for it yet.
Title: Re: [Mod] SMF Articles
Post by: Vincent Volmer on April 30, 2010, 01:24:59 am
Okay, thanks....

Other question: after installing Articles I get a lot of errors in the log (I did not change anything in subs.php manually):

Code: [Select]
8: Undefined index: smfarticles_menu
File: /shared/usr/wzen1234567/DOMAIN/www.digiscrap.nl/HTML/Sources/Subs.php
Line: 4149

smfarticles_menu is present in the Modifications.dutch.php

And

Code: [Select]
8: Undefined offset: 4596 / 4428 / 154 and a lot of other numbers
File: /shared/usr/wzen1234567/DOMAIN/www.digiscrap.nl/HTML/Sources/PrettyUrls-Filters.php
Line: 567 / 568 / 495 and a lot of other numbers

Thanks for help on this...

Edit1: with SMF Articles Pretty Filter enabled (not tested without).
Edit2: Also errors with SMF Articles Pretty Filter disabled
Edit3: Hmmm removed the Articles mod and still these errors:

Code: [Select]
8: Undefined offset: 3271
File: /shared/usr/wzen1234567/DOMAIN/www.digiscrap.nl/HTML/Sources/PrettyUrls-Filters.php
Line: 568

That means PrettyURLs is probably causing these errors instead of Articles. The first error has disappeared.

Hello smfhacks,

Is there a way to use an other editor in Articles (fckeditor)? Or is there maybe an other mod that adds the possibility to upload images to the server instead of only linking it with the (http://) tags?

The reason is that we want to allow membersgroups to write articles but we don't want to have links to external images.

Thanks,
Vincent

Another editor not at this time thought about it. But decided to stick with the SMF editor so other html editors are not supported.

Article mod should have a setting to allow users to upload images under settings if you are using the latest verson

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it on simplemachines.org or here, and if it's already a feature then I'm blind coz I can't find the button...

Is there any way to add pages to the articles mod?  i.e. page 1,2,3 of the same article.  So a person could write, say, detailed instructions on how to do something, and the reader would click on the next page to get to the next step.

The reason I ask is because I'd like to use this modification as a fiction writing mod on my forum.  In this way, the authors can all start 1 article which will be one story, and each new page could be a new chapter in the story.

Please let me know if this is possible or where I can get this?  Thanks!

Requires a custom php code. You can do a mysql query to get a count on articles table where id_member equals the posters member id.

Hi!  First off,  great mod.  I do have a few questions/requests...

(1) For some reason when I attach images they come out as a thumbnail but do not expand when clicked on... when I EDIT I see the thumbnail at the bottom but when i run my mouse over it all I get for a link to the larger version is: "javascript:void(0);"... I do have "ILA 1.2.1 (Inline attachments) installed which may be causing a conflict.  I'd LOVE to get the ILA functions to work in SMF Articles...

(2) Any way to implement a "reorder" option for articles the same way you have them for categories?

(3) Where do I look to center the category Icon's rather than have them flush left?

(4) It would be awesome if there was some implementation with your Gallery lite/Gallery mod... so Gallery items could be displayed in articles and/or vice-versa?

THANKS!

Friz

3. Would be in themes/default/Articles.template.php and then find the template_articlesmain function

For 1,2,4 are all possible to do just requires time on my end to do so.

Hello SMFHacks,

I would like to vote on point 2  ;)

(2) Any way to implement a "reorder" option for articles the same way you have them for categories?

And may I put another request? It would be useful to have an Image Hosting (hosted on the same domain) for images to make it more easy for members to insert images (which are remote linked in most cases now) and it keeps the articles complete, including images. So no problem when the member deletes his image on the remote image host (happens a lot).

Thanks again ;)

Hi All,

Probably very late to ask on this but have started with smf recently and done the integration of SMF Articles in site. Saw few discussing about "How to make SMFArticles seo friendly?" but there was only one reply to add in robots.txt but is it possible to do via .htaccess file with prettyurls or from the code? Have anyone tried that can you please give me suggestions on this?

Thanks.

So for example - UserA joins my site today and gets access to Article1 then 24 hours later Article2 and so on. With the ability to change the time period between the drip feed articles.

Also lets say I have bronze, silver and gold members - could it be possible to change the time release between articles e.g. Bronze get them every 7 days, Silver every 3 days, Gold every 24 hours.

With the addition of Categorizing by membership level eg.

Bronze members are allowed to view Articles 1, 2, 3
Silver member are allowed to view Articles 1,2,3,4,5,6
Gold members are aloowed to view Articles 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

All of the above on time release.

If this addition to this mod is to be created I have $300 to $500 for you if you add this.

Trying to understand more

So you want articles them self to permission based.
And articles to add to appear in a sequence over a time period to be allowed. Like a day after a member joins, then another a week later and so on?

Yes but the dates and timing will be set from the subscription sign up date.

Here is a subscription example:

So this guy signed up to supervip gold which is a subscription type and he gets moved to a member group supervip gold when he signed up. The date he signed up to the subscription period will be in paid subscription table.

So he signed up on 22nd august 2014 - then on that day i want him to access article 1 then next day article 2, then 3 days after article 3, then 2 weeks later article 4
