Title: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start
Post by: SMFHacks on January 22, 2010, 12:15:20 pm
Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start

Step 1: Setup Paypal

You will need a Paypal Business account and the first is to make sure you have IPN enabled. You can do this by logging into PayPal. Click on the Profile Link Then click Instant Payment Notification Preferences and then turn IPN on. And enter the url for ipn which would be SMF 1.1.x http://www.yourforum.com/adselleripn.php for SMF 2.0.x http://www.yourforum.com/adselleripn2.php

If you already have a paypal url you do not need to overwrite it.

Step 2. Enter your PayPal email in Ad Seller Pro Settings

Log into your forum and go to the admin area. Click Ad Seller Pro then select the settings tab.
Under the "PayPal email address" enter your paypal email address to receive payments.
Then click Save Settings to save the settings

Step 3. Enable Ad Locations and Membergroup Access

By default with Ad Seller Pro the adlocations are disabled so they will need to be enabled.

To enable them go to the Ad Seller Pro Locations tab
Find a location that you want to enable for instance "Overall Footer" click on the edit link.
This will take you to page to edit the location description and settings.
You want to make sure under the Title that Enabled is set to enabled.

The other important part on this page is "Membergroups"
You want to make sure that all your membergroups that you want to see ads be checked.

We would suggest to keep admin's showing the ads as well to see how the placements work the users

The description is shown on the view ad package detail page for buyers. So this can be customized if you wish to better describe the ad location.

Step 4. Add an Advertisement

As an admin you can also add your own advertisements. In Ad Seller Pro click on the "Manage Ads" tab

Then click on the "Add Ad" tab above the advertisement list.
This will take you to a page that allows you to setup an advertisement.

The ad type is important we have three ad types supported which are Text Ad's, Banner Ad's, Custom Code.
Choose the type of Ad to setup and enter the ad details.

Under Locations choose locations that are not disabled and your ad will be shown in them

Click on Add Ad and your advertisement will now be added to Ad Seller Pro

Step 5. Setting up Ad Packages

If you want to offer people visiting your site an option to buy ad space. You will need to setup an ad package.

Next click on the "Ad Packages" tab inside Ad Seller Pro.
Then click on the "Add Package" option
Enter a title for the package, a price, and any package limits such as impressions etc, expire days.

After you have the settings picked out choose which ad locations you want to be part of this ad package and click "Add Package"

The package will then be added and can be accessed either via the Advertise link in the menu if enabled or by the Advertise Here link in the location if enabled.

If you have any other questions let us know.

How do you put ads into Tinyportal blocks?  Do you use PHP?  I'd like to put a couple using these blocks.

Found a glitch and not sure if it has to do with my install that I posted a concern about, but Guests aren't allowed to buy ad space on my forum.

Yes you would need to create a new location first.  Then click on the Get Code link after you make the location and place that in a tinyportal php block

That is currently the default behavior. Need to have a registered account in order for them to manage their ads. Such as uploading banners, creating text ad's, and view their reporting for the advertising campaign that they ordered.

When I do that it just shows the code that I pasted there in the block.  I tried it in both HTML and PHP both do the same thing.

It will add some extra load depending on the number of locations enabled/and if you have any advanced logging turned on as well. Are you using the SSI in the ezportal block at the moment.

Guess I don't know what you mean by SSI in ezportal block?  I have 4 locations enabled.

You were placing the edit code of a location inside a TP block? Just released Ad Seller Pro 1.0.1 as well

If it works then that's fine forgot that TP you don't need to do the SSI include so you should be ok

Hello SMFHacks,

After only 3 hours of sleep, setting up AdSeller Pro went fine and simple. Thanks for this great mod!  ;)

I'm wondering why only the Clicks are counted for the text links and not for the custom code? For all of the ads I use a custom code and at the clicks is says: N/A (see attachment).

Is there something I don't understand or see? Or am I missing a setting? I can't find it.

Thanks again!

Vincent

Custom code clicks can't be counted since you are entering in your own javascript or html code the system can not intercept those clicks. It can only records clicks for created text ad's or banner ads.

Thanks for your answer.
Oke, I understand. The custom code is already counted by a tracking website (tradetracker.nl (http://tc.tradetracker.net/?c=27&m=118&a=23548&r=&u=)) so it isn't necessary in this case.

I can add flash banners?

okey, I understand but these banners can't using the click counter? Or is there an other way to use a SWF banner?

Vincent
Title: Re: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start
Post by: SMFHacks on February 07, 2010, 09:11:16 am
Flash banners we can not detect clicks either sine we have to be able to add our tracking system to the links which we can not do to a flash banner since you would modify the swf file.

Once I understood that I had to upload the zip file to my forum it was easy to set up (following the instructions here) and I now have 5 ads running on my forum - at this stage I haven't chosen to sell ads but rather set up the banners I had for affiliate programs I've signed up for. This means the advertising now is targetted to my audience rather than generic google adsense ads.  Thank you.

I can do that edit for you but will need to you to attach this post your index.template.php of your custom  theme.

I'd be very appreciative if you could give me a hand with editing mine as well.  I tried to follow but I'm sure way over my head, and don't want to mess this whole thing up!  ;D

My index.template.php file should be attached, with my many thanks in advance!

Oops!  Installed it, and got a total forum crash, error on screen was "Unable to load the 'main_above' template."  Probably me doing something stupid, but I have no idea what.  Hope you do  ;)

It should be upload to your themes/customthemenamefolder/

And make sure file permissions are 755 or 644
Title: Re: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start
Post by: chuckpjones on October 17, 2012, 11:06:12 am
Yep, got it installed in the proper place.  Tried it with 644 and then with 755, but both still throws off the "Unable to load the main-above template.  Rest of the screen is pure white, and no way around it I've found.  I should probably also say that the forum works just fine with the unmodified original, so I'm guessing this must be something directly related to Ad Seller Pro?  Any other ideas on how to fix this greatly appreciated!

Your origina index.template.phpl template file works right?

Do you have AdSeller Pro installed at the moment?

Also check your forum's error log for any possible relalted errors?
Title: Re: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start
Post by: chuckpjones on October 17, 2012, 09:44:27 pm
Yes, the original file works just fine.  And yes, I did install AdSellerPro.  Only thing showing in the error log was the Unable to Load main-above.
Title: Re: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start
Post by: SMFHacks on October 17, 2012, 11:46:11 pm
hmm
Try this file. I commented out the Ad Seller Pro code let me know if it works or not.

Also are you using SMF 2.0.2? I saw the template was labeled 2.0 RC2
Title: Re: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start
Post by: chuckpjones on October 18, 2012, 08:25:34 am
Hmmmm is right.  It didn't Work!
So I'm guessing that possibly the file I uploaded to you could be corrupted in either my upload or download, so I'm attaching the original file again that IS working here, just in case.  "Cap'n, there be GREMLINS in da code transmission somewhere!"

To answer your other questions, yes I am up on a new install of SMF 2.02.  This is my first time using SMF. I didn't feel confident doing up my own skin, so I bought one that I'm presently using.  Got to have a good looking forum, as well as a well functioning one, right?  It's likely that the guy who did the original template for the skin probably did it some time ago, and started his development on 2.0 RC2.  I sure hope there's not a problem with the skin, but if there is much better to find it out now than way down the road.  Since this is a whole new install, I'm not at all tied to using this skin if you can suggest another real good, clean looking similar skin to consider instead?  One that we know works perfectly with all of your great SMFHacks?

Fixed.

What it looks like an ftp setting on the ftp client was wrong. I checked the modified file on the site and it was all code was on one line.

Reuploaded the fixed file and the left and right ad blocks appeared normally.

I'd like to know if it's possible to modify the code so I can display multiple ads in the header, footer and after the first post. Currently ASP rotates between multiple banners for a given location.

I've attached an image so you see an example of what I mean.

I have written some custom code for that in the past.
I can either do it for you  or I might just build into ad seller pro as a feature.

1.0.14
+Made it easier to show multiple ads in a single location but still requires some code edits to templates.

The main change was to the ShowAdLocation($LocationID, $boardID = 0, $checkReturn = false, $showAdsCount = 1, $verticalAd = false)

Added ,$showAdsCount = 1, $verticalAd = false parameters to function.
Which determines how many ads to show at a time in an location and the format either horizontal by default or vertical if true.

Done requires new version installed and some minor theme edits.
So for instance lets say if you wanted to update the footer ad location to support five horizontal ads.

You would find the following in the themes/default/index.template.php
Code: [Select]
ShowAdLocation(2);
And change it to
Code: [Select]
ShowAdLocation(2,0,false,5,true);

If you need to help on a specific location let me know.

I've set everything up as per your instructions, including the PayPal IPN but as soon as I click on the Buy button I get a page showing "Processing" but no further. Nothing is showing up in my PayPal account. What could be causing this?

Edit: I just tried opening the Buy link in a new tab and it worked. I'm guessing this has something to do with my running the forum in a wrapper. The simplest workaround would be to make the Buy links open in a new page or tab. Where can I do this?

2nd Edit: It would appear that, even though that worked it sent an INVALID IPN error. I found a thread on this but it appears unresolved?

For SMF 2.0 in themes/default/adseller2.template.php

Around line 446
Find
Code: [Select]
echo '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=adpro;sa=buyadpackage&amp;id=' . $row['ID_PACKAGE'] . '"><img src="' . $AdSellerSettings['seller_buynowimageurl'] .  '" alt="" /></a>';

Change to
Code: [Select]
echo '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=adpro;sa=buyadpackage&amp;id=' . $row['ID_PACKAGE'] . '" target="blank"><img src="' . $AdSellerSettings['seller_buynowimageurl'] .  '" alt="" /></a>';

Around line 544
Find
Code: [Select]
echo '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=adpro;sa=buyadpackage&amp;id=' . $context['seller_item_detail']['ID_PACKAGE'] . '"><img src="' . $AdSellerSettings['seller_buynowimageurl'] .  '" alt="" /></a>';

Change to
Find
Code: [Select]
echo '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=adpro;sa=buyadpackage&amp;id=' . $context['seller_item_detail']['ID_PACKAGE'] . '" target="_blank"><img src="' . $AdSellerSettings['seller_buynowimageurl'] .  '" alt="" /></a>';

I'm using SMF 1.1.17 - where should I make those edits?

Edit: I found the same lines in mytheme/adseller.template.php and modified them (you missed the underscore on the first edit ;))

I see they implement my workaround. Any idea why the wrapper should be causing this behaviour and if there is a fix?
Title: Re: Setting up Ad Seller Pro Quick Start

Hard to say with the wrapper. I guess it is disabling the auto redirect. Probably since it is in a header.

OK. Makes sense and I can live with it until I migrate the site to SMF 2.0 with Tiny Portal instead of Joomal.

I'm setting up Paypal to redirect back to a thank you page when the transaction is complete. Does Adseller generate such a page or should I create my own?

And it will be found inside there.

What type of ads are you using? Is it Banner, Text, or Custom Code
What SMF version?

Yes, I've updated to the new version. Do I need to uninstall the older version?

Yes, I can see multiple ads at one time, but they're stacked on top of each other vertically. I need to have them horizontal on the same row.

I'm running Banner Ads

SMF Version is 2.0.3

No you don't have to uninstall the old version.
Can you attach the template file that you modified?

Are the banners ads large ie such as if they are too big they wil not fit on the same screen.

The banner ads are approx 235x60 pixels

I've attached my template file for your review.

Copy this file to sources folder. Try this updated adseller2.php file

Yes, that worked. I can now display 4 banners wide in a row for the Header and Footer.

1. Is it possible to add padding and a "center command" to the ads so they are not touching? (See screen shot)
2. How do I modify the code for the "after first post" position, so I can also display multiple ads there?

For #1 look slike the footer block
Find this code
Code: [Select]
$adSellerAdData =  ShowAdLocation(2);
if ($adSellerAdData != false)
{
echo $adSellerAdData;
}
And change to
Code: [Select]
$adSellerAdData =  ShowAdLocation(2);
if ($adSellerAdData != false)
{
echo '<center>' . $adSellerAdData . '</center>;
}

#2
Attach your display.template.php and can change change that how many do you want to show and horizontal?

Hello,

I can't get adseller to work in the Anecdota theme using SMF 2.0.4. Can you help?

To me the path and url don't look right and I haven't been able to find any instructions on file and folder CMOD settings

The path should probably be
/var/www/html/adseller/

You should have copied the adseller folder inside the zip file to main directory of the forum.

For theme changes you can find the edits by uploading the adseller pro zip file to
http://www.smfhacks.com/smf-package-parser.html

And that will give you the theme edits that need to be made for your theme.

If you can't do the edits you can attach the theme files here or provide an ftp account.

What location do you have the ad appearing in? Also are you using a custom theme? And what type of ad?

As I get ready to go live with Ads, is there something I have to modify to have two or more ads in a row in one spot?  I see the config where you can set number across and how many on a page - is it that easy to do or what?

Rotate or have two ads side by side

I think just 2 468x60 ads side by side for now.
If I do just one, can I justify it left. ctr or rt?

Yeah there is options when creating the ad to set the alignment.

For sidebyside you will need to customize the ad location code which depends on which location you want to edit.

Ok, I see the alignment crop down.

So what does the "Ad Packages per row" setting do?

When I want to add multiples on a row, do I just come back here and attach a file?

Maybe you've already done this but if not, when you are working the next release can you fix the spelling on the "Memebername" on the column bar on the Manage Ads, Ad Approval and View Transactions forms please?
Also I see that the button at the bottom of each page in the Ad Seller Pro section is cut off, maybe the theme is doing this? See attachment - an example of "Memebername" is shown also.

Thanks bud.

ad packages per row affects the advertise menu button. Is the number of ad packages to show per row on that page.

Yes you will need to attach that file here to support multiple ads in that location

Will fix member name spelling for next update

export transactions looks like a theme issue.

As I look through the other areas I see chopped off buttons too, so you're right.

Are you talking about the boxes shown on the attached?

The top two are for the advertise page for packages display.
