How are they entering their display name? The default of SMF does not allow them to choose the display name.
Does allow. SMFHacks, Do confirm that you haven't changed the "Allow users to edit their displayed name?" permission on your forum. ps. Reply with quote (with Quick reply box enabled) does not work for me. (just green ~Loading~ endless notification.)

It could but doesn't make much of a difference since the user never has a chance to change their display name until after they are registered in the forum and approved.
SMFHacks, i do not understand you here. I have changed my display name on your forum from "gri" to ~grif~.. timely. Do confirm that ~grif appeared~ in the member.realName field in your database. At the moment, all my posts on the forum have the ~grif~ displayed name. If i had my Welcome Topic with {username} implemented - then it should change the display automatically to something like: ~Dear grif, you are always welcome at the forum.. with your gritoadmixes~.

Not sure if that would work. Because the mod uses the username when they register on the forum and by default the registration form does not ask for a display name.
SMFHacks, WelcomeTopic.xml : 'subject' => str_replace("{username}",$row['memberName'],$row2['welcomesubject']), 'body' => str_replace("{username}",$row['memberName'],$row2['welcomebody']),
Username - is used only for identification by SMF (for login). It is saved in members.memberName . Name - is the displayed name that people will see. It is saved in members.realName . After the registration - the default value of members.realName is equal to members.memberName value. When an administrator included the {username} variable in Welcome Topic settings - the mod should display a value of the database field members.realName instead of members.memberName , i.e. 'subject' => str_replace("{username}",$row['realName'],$row2['welcomesubject']), 'body' => str_replace("{username}",$row['realName'],$row2['welcomebody']),
Shouldn't it ?

IWAC's idea
SMFHacks, Are there any tools for SMF which would allow to reflect somehow the attitude of the topic Author to the post of another member in Author's topic.. after reading of another member's post by topic author ? For example, there could be formalized icons (maybe visible for post author only): Just Read Have Read and Ignored Be More Specific Wait for Reply ... A separate ~Welcome Topic~ is being prepared.. Or just a link (grivitoutik) to the new separate topic with the quote of the original member's post could be published.. in special section of the member's post.

This mod can not be done for this would require a new mod.
SMFHacks, be more exact please. Which user's request postS your reply is referred to ? Create your own gritoadmix ~SMFHacks to Gri~ at my forum to have a possibility to reply on gri's requests to your ~SMFHacks to Gri~ gritoadmix.

SMFHacks,
I have fixed the mod for utf8 and selected the board for Welcome topic posting to.
I have prepared the desired title and the body of the Welcome message.
I have also included "{username}" in the Poster Name field - exactly as i need it.
But the next welcome topic appeared without poster name at all. Therefore i uninstalled the Welcome Topic mod.
Please, Allow {username} including into Poster Name field.
ps. After that I will install the mod again and will ask you to register at my forum to check whether the Welcome topic is being created correctly.. to continue the defended dialogue.

Hi I was wondering if someone can donate some of their time to me? I have messed up my forum so many times, as to I have no idea how to install mods.
I really would like a couple mods along with a nice theme installed on my board.
Is there anyone who would like to help me?
Nina, i could be just beside you to make a remark on case if i will notice something wrong. Where is the link to your forum ?

I installed it from the SMF mod site
So, SMFHacks is the same person as vbgamer45 at simplemachines.org and SMF For Free at smfforfree.com ? Why have you ignored his support topic http://www.smfhacks.com/index.php/topic,46.0.html ? Unfortunately i am not in touch with him. I am banned from smfforfree.com as well as from simplemachines.org . Should say that i do not understand the destination of SMF Links mod. I replied just because suspected that your question may lead to modification of the post link format without topic id in the link. The posts once created should have been identified by the links with message id only to be indifferent to splitting and merging them. If anybody is concerned with such modification then let me know in your gritoadmix at my forum. Thank you.

Thanks for reply. Visit 'Links' from the menu on my site, then select a category (say wedding), then hover mouse on the link, and read the link.
Though on clicking, the link opens the partner site, the link reads differently.
Thanks. Please link me directly to the mod ~Links~ you have installed.

Hello. I'm just started using SMF links on http://freegames.ind.in . One of my link exchange partners has expressed concern over the link, as the link appears as http://freegames.ind.in/index.php?action=links;sa=visit;id=xx .
Wanted to know if anybody can throw some light whether this kind of a link would be interpreted differently by search engines than a direct link, because codewise there is no link to the link partner.
Also, if there is a way to make the link appear direct.. Many thanks
Hier, where can a user (guest) of your forum get such a link format from ? Where does it appear ? Do please publish an example of the real link to any of your forum post which includes the id number only. Or i have missed something..
