Modifications Talk / idea for mod: karma based membergroup
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:51:41 am »
just been talking about this on my forum as we're trying to pin down a good way of handling potential trolls who might sign up, and we felt this would be a good idea.

it would work in a similar way to post-based membergroups, but ultimately would put the fate of the new member in the hands of the members already there.

how it would work.

the newbie signs up and is given limited access.  They can send pm's, reply to posts and that's about it.

if the other members feel they are fitting in well, then they can increase their karma.  Once the karma reaches a certain level, then their access increases.  They can now send pm's, reply to posts and vote in polls.

and it continues like that - it is entirely dependent on the membergroup and the permissions the admin sets up.

decreasing karma would be removed to prevent abuse, as people could feasibly repeatedly decrease someone's karma to lower their overall forum access. (there is already a mod to remove the ability to smite ..)

if the newbie ultimately turns out to be a troll who has just played nice until they have full access, then the admin can then reset their karma back to zero and they have to start all over again - or feasibly re-register under a new name and still start again.

if they then continue trolling then the admin can just kick them out.

how does that sound ? would it be easy to do ?

Modifications Talk / alternative to SMF arcade ?
« on: November 18, 2007, 06:34:46 pm »
anyone have any suggestions ?

i think smf arcade has had it's day to be honest - there's a persistent problem with sessions not being found and nobody there seems interested in resolving it.

and that's just my problem - there are others there that suggest the most recent update will be the last, so if anyone knows of any good free alternatives that i can attach to my forum then i'd be grateful .. cheers

i'm having a nightmare transferring to my new host, but that's another story :)

i've installed and set up the gallery lite on my smf forum and it's working fine.

i've copied the images and thumbnails across from my old host, and i've updated the relevant database tables and everything works as it should.

apart from when i set the gallery path to http:/my_url/gallery/ it tells me it's not writable.

but it IS writable because i've done a chmod 777 on it, and the root directory

so i'm a bit confused if anyone has any ideas?

thanks

*edit - solved about 2 seconds after i posted, so please ignore.  sorry :)
