Feature Requests / Re: PERMIT based permissions vs DENY

Thanks. You have my vote to do it.

Would be a good excuse to charge for upgrades. :)

Feature Requests / PERMIT based permissions vs DENY
« on: April 06, 2019, 12:16:11 pm »
I'm using Downloads System Pro an it does what I need, but something that's preventing me from doing more than the bare minimum of what I need is my hesitance to get too deep into the security I'd need to setup for new download areas. We have some groups of clients who are completely separate from other clients, and then there are groups within those, each of which would need their own areas.

If security was setup as PERMIT based then I could add a download area for any particular group as needed, with just one PERMIT granted to it.

Maybe in v6.0? :)

Applied the new beta 1 and the issue is gone. Thanks.

I had 52 of these in the log after testing for an hour or so with 5.0 beta.

I can't make it happen here on your site. But it happens on mine with latest FireFox and IE.

Also happens with 4.1.11 after a downgrade due to errors in the log after the 5.0 beta. (Will post that on another thread)

Support / Download button doesn't initiate a download the first time
« on: November 23, 2018, 09:19:27 pm »
First of all, sorry about the formatting but the WYSIWYG editor is stripping my carriage returns for some reason. I'll try typing html carriage returns in to fix it.

Download button doesn't initiate a download the first time.

I just downloaded and installed 5.0beta, filename DownloadsPro5.0beta.zip

Unrelated to this bug report, it says the following in the Settings area:

Your Version: 5.0beta Latest Version: 4.1.11 Your downloads system version is not up to date!

Now, on to the bug...

I believe this also happened with the previous version 4.1.11

I have it set to Show Download Link in the Category Display Settings. But I have noticed that the first time a user clicks on the download button it doesn't download but enters the file properties as if they clicked on the filename. All subsequent clicks of the Download button in the Category Display initiates an immediate download as it should.

After the user logs out and back in the behavior repeats.

Edit: Apparently just the preview stripped carriage returns and the final message displayed all of my "br" html tags. Edited and removed.

Is there a way to turn off the "Lastest Posts" column on the main downloads view? I don't believe it was there on the free version, but now on the Pro version there are three columns in my main downloads view. They are "Category Name", "Total Files" and "Latest Posts".

The content looks like this:

All I want visible are the category name and total files.

To followup for anyone researching this topic... purchased the Pro version and now there is a download button on the Category view, which reduces the clicks required for download from 4 to 3. Thanks!

Darn. I guess I chose the wrong option. Taking it to PM. :)

I don't seem to have a "Show Download Link" option available. Is that an option with the Pro version only?

We talked about us buying the Pro version but ended up paying to remove the copyright on the free version instead.

Is there any way to have fewer clicks to a download? See this email I got from the boss when he looked at the way our customers can download documentation that we provide in a PDF file located in specific download areas visible only to those customers. In this case I changed it to ABC and XYZ for simplicity.

Quote
I just tested the ABC & XYZ accounts.  I'm curious.  Can we make the process easier?  It's 4 clicks to pay-dirt.

1.  Click the Downloads link
2.  Click the ABC link
3.  Click the ABC Guide link
4.  Click the ABC Guide.pdf link

Ideally 2 clicks.  3 is not unreasonable.  4 is one too many.

Your thoughts?

Thanks. I'll try installing it on the live server and see how it integrates. The DENY based security paradigm may be tricky for me to get around.

If I install the free version and use it to setup rights and download categories, can I then uninstall the free version and install Pro over it and not lose any ground?

Thanks for doing the legwork on that permissions issue. I appreciate it.

It looks like I'll be making the purchase of Downloads System Pro, despite the headache I may end up with regarding the DENY based permissions. :)

As I recall we purchased the Knowledgebase license before. Basically it was the right to remove the copyright that we bought. I think I had my boss go to the link and make the purchase himself.

I'm assuming we can strip any copyrights from the purchased version of Downloads System Pro?
