Support / Re: How are ads sourced
« on: December 29, 2022, 04:15:27 am »
I have and yes has gotten worse over the years but there isn't many good options out there.
Doesn't surprise me somehow.  I last used adsense some time ago for a site that had a fair number of visitors yet according to google the number of clicks was very low so was getting me not very far.
Anyway, allowing members to place ads still sounds good.  What about casual visitors as well as members?
By that what I mean is, I could perhaps put a notice up on my forum inviting casual visitors to submit ads via email, so I wouldn't be relying just on members.

Have you seen the ToU for adsense?  They give almost every reason under the sun why they shouldn't pay you anything.  Allowing members to buy ad space isn't bad though.

How exactly are ads / advertisers sourced for Ad Seller Pro?

Also, as I understand it, ASPro allows you to have ads on a none SMF site.  Is this in addition to an SMF site, or is it one or the other?

Hi,

On reflection maybe I owe you an apology, ;)  maybe I was a bit sharp in this thread, it's just that it came as a bit of a shock when one of my members sent me a PM saying there was no 'buy it now' button showing after he submitted a listing.  Also, it would never have occurred to me that the 'Hide buy it now button' option was checked/selected if you hadn't mentioned it.  I would have thought that this should be unchecked by default...

Good to hear about the changes in 5.1.1!

Right, finally I've fixed the 'buy it now' issue.  A registered member once logged in no longer gets the error message and can also submit a listing of their own.  But you did not (as God is my witness...)tell me to delete the table at the bottom in the first place.  You told me just to remove (deselect) the  permissions.  Anyway, that's that.

I know that; I realise that, but I honestly think you are missing the point!

Bye, bye!

Code: [Select]

Under the list of permissions, View; Add listing; etc, there is a table showing as follows:

Member group name  Permission  Permission  Permission  Permission  Permission  [Delete]

Has this anything to do with it?  Should I in fact be clicking on these [Delete] button/s?
Yes you should delete each entry.
Ok, thanks.  Is that as well as removing the permissions or instead of?  Also, if ALL of these permissions are unchecked for all member groups, how will registered members add a listing; view a listing and add a comment?  I don't get it!

Yes for all memgergroups delete those entries.
Right, I did this for just one category as a test, but again if a registered member (that's logged-in) clicks on the 'Buy it now' button or link, the error message 'You are not allowed to place a bid in this category' is shown.

Also, when I logged back in as administrator, I discovered that those permissions were still selected even though I had unchecked them.  Something is wrong here.  Or there's something you're not telling me that I should be doing.

One other thing that might help:

Under the list of permissions, View; Add listing; etc, there is a table showing as follows:

Member group name   Permission   Permission   Permission   Permission   Permission   [Delete]

Has this anything to do with it?  Should I in fact be clicking on these [Delete] button/s?

Code: [Select]
Firstly (and this may seem like a silly question, but what the heck...), what exactly do you mean by category level permissions?

The permissions link next Edit/Delete by the category. All those permissions need to be removed.
(Attachment Link)

Code: [Select]
Secondly, if I do delete (deselect??) all category level permissions, will this work?  Will this result in no error message showing when the buy-it-now button is clicked on?
Yes, that will fix it.
OK, thanks, only I don't have exactly what you're indicating with the graphic...  If I go to a category I have is this:

ADD LISTING  NOTIFY  EDIT CATEGORY  DELETE CATEGORY  PERMISSIONS

If I click on PERMISSIONS I get this:

Member Group Name  ""
View
Add Listing
Add Auction
Place Bid
Add Comment

So, do I deselect all these permissions (including Add Listing??) for all member groups?

dont use category level permissions at all! delete them it does not do what you want to do.

First you say disable it, now you say keep it enabled.  You are either deliberately confusing this whole thing, or something else.  Now answer the question.  Which is: Which are the category level permissions that disable bidding (just to be sure)?

As it is, the classifieds system is not usable, it does not work properly.

Just do not enable auction listings when editing the category. There is a checkbox "Can have auction listings " as long as that is not checked there is no auction listings.

Then just remove the category level permissions that disable bidding since that affects buy it now as well and that should be it.
I've never had 'Can have auction listings' checked for any category; I have never had auction listings.

Which are the category level permissions that disable bidding (just to be sure)?

Thank you.

It looks like you setup category level permissions restricting bidding for that membergroup. I would remove those permissions from that category for all users.
Bidding is not involved in listings with buy it now. So that error message is a little misleading.
That's right, I did setup category level permissions restricting bidding for that member group (in fact for all member groups) because I don't want bidding; I don't want auction listings.  I just want ordinary 'item for sale' listings.

Also, how is restricting bidding permissions any different from removing them?  It's the same thing.

The error message is the one that I get, misleading or not.

What do I do?

Is it a normal listing? When create a listing does give you an option to enter buy it now price?

Also check you did not hide it under Admin -> Classifieds Configurations -> Settings -> Layout Settings
The bottom of the page.
Thanks again.  Turns out that 'buy it now' option was checked so I unchecked it and it;s now showing, but problem now is that if a registered member clicks on it, an error message comes up saying 'you are not allowed to bid on this category'.
I don't get it.  This is a 'buy it now' button, not a 'bid for it now' button, so why does bidding even come into it.  I don't want bidding.

Right, just enabled View Classifieds and Bid on Listing for all member groups and post count based groups, BUT THERE'S NO BUY BUTTON!
