Suggestions / Re: RSS feed to auto create a new forum post
« on: September 29, 2015, 03:32:18 am »
Hi SmfHacks...
I have the RSSfeeder working fine on my forum but it seems to interfeer with the smf inbuilt RSS.... It seems to happen when a title of an external site has spaces?

http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.iberianatureforum.com%2Findex.php%3Faction%3D.xml%3Bsa%3Drecent%3Blimit%3D50%3Btype%3Drss

When this happens the feed of the forum that I have on other websites breaks and in the case of joomla websites it crashes the entire site untill the module with the rss is removed...

Any ideas how to fix this?

best regards...
Clive

hi,
overnight the mod auto posted from 2 rss feeds from my other websites. It seems to work but doesn't bring the feed in date order like the most recent two entries on the rss feed. It seems to pull them at random from the rss.. this is one feed that the mod pulled randoml and not in date order.

AndyHello Clive Muir. How may I help you?

Clive Muir hi andy

I just noticed that... the mod i am using that wont work requires the following

Requires fsockopen, fopen, or curl php function to be enabled

fsockopen, fopen are disabled on a shared server

but what about curl php function to be enabled

AndyYes, curl function is enabled

Clive Muir you enabled it now or it has always been enabled???

AndyIt was already enabled

Hi, I am on a shared server..... I guess this is why the mod wont work.... here is the chat from my hosts but basically the problem is
Quote
Andy The modules which are not enabled are fsockopen and fopen, we cannot enable these modules in our shared server

Back to the drawing board because I cant afford a dedicated server. :(
-------------------

I am trying to get an rss feed mod working on my forum.....

www.iberianatureforum.com

can you please check this

Requires fsockopen, fopen, curl php function to be enabled

the script is not working so maybe some of the above is not enabled by default?

AndySorry, such functions are disabled in our shared server considering security reasons

Clive Muir can the be enabled for one domain?

AndyIts a server wide change, it cannot be enabled for a single domain

Clive Muir which functions are not enabled?

AndyI will check and update you

Clive Muir its strange because the mod worked at first and then stopped working. So either these functions are enabled or not? or some security measure disabled them when the mod started working?

AndyThe modules which are not enabled are fsockopen and fopen, we cannot enable these modules in our shared server

Clive Muir ok thanks for your help.....

Hi,

I installed and set up an rss from one of my joomla sites and it created 2 new topics from the rss....

I set up for a wordpress site of mine and no topics created.

created new post on wordpress site
created new post on joomla site.

No new topics being created on the forum...

I have tried ticking the fake cron job f5, f5) -  no new posts created

I have tried setting cron task set at 1 minute via cpanel using the url given in the mod admin but no new posts created

Any ideas?

Thanks for the quick answer....

So it works on custom templates, just a straight install from package manager?.... This should be a paid for mod because of its usefulness....

Oh, I just found one at SMF that you already wrote :)

can you confirm that I can post from multiple rss feeds to different boards with this mod?

As my forum is beautifully customized by SMFhacks can you PM me a price to install this mod please?
Thanks
Clive

Suggestions / RSS feed to auto create a new forum post
« on: May 05, 2015, 03:55:33 am »
Hi SMFHacks

Is there a mod available (or is it possible) to take an RSS feed from an external website and auto create a new topic with title, excerpt (say 100 characters) and link to where the feed came from.... There are plenty of addons that do this for wordpress sites but i cant find one for smf and i think forum admins might like a mod that does this.

This way I could auto post from relevant websites.

Best regards
Clive

Suggestions / social share icons on all posts and topics
« on: May 05, 2015, 03:49:44 am »
Hi SMFHacks.

Is there a mod available to add social share icons to all existing posts on a forum? My forum has 28,000 posts right now but interest and posts have been declining for some time so I wonder if I can get some people back by offering a social share to members...

Thanks
Clive

Hi all (SMFHacks)

I have a few friends who are photographers and have been looking at ways to sell their images.... between us we have over 100,000 images of a reasonable quality... many of us are writers, naturalists, wildlife guides etc ..

My question....

With a Forum and the available SMF hacks that are available here, would it be feasible to create a member generated gallery with images for purchase and download?

Image file size is an issue... On average my printable images exceed 80MB each

However I see that each board could be an image author and a platform to promote their images... with links to download the hi res originals....

Portal - Forum - SMF gallery - Smf Store or clasifieds

Any ideas?

My forum is also niche iberianatureforum.com and it looks ok on a tablet but is pretty much unusable on a smaller mobile (for me anyway... I like a keyboard)...

One thing I have noticed... the forum admin need to stay on top of everything including newsletters and answering posts etc... I dropped out of my forum for a year or so due to work pressure and didnt post much, just admin and keeping spammers away etc

Now i am back and people are posting more.... So the forum is me? I am forum.... :)

By the way, my forum wouldn't look anywhere near as nice as it does without the excellent help from smfhacks.....

Best regards from Spain

Hi,

I recently upgraded to the latest version....

In the package manager i uninstalled the old version and the images from the old install were left intact with all permissions etc... I then installed the latest version... No issues and all working fine...

Just in case before I made the changes I did make a full site backup via cpanel but in my case I didnt need it... All worked perfectly.

What i do see in my package manager though is the older version still there with the option to remove it.... Not sure whether to remove it or not :)

regards
Clive

Site Discussion / Are forums losing out to social networks?

Hi all,

i was just wondering what other forum owners think about the increase in facebook/twitter users in the last few years and how that has affected your forum...

I have run my forum www.iberianatureforum now since 2009 and sometimes it feels like "flogging a dead horse"... I also use facebook but still rely on good solid conversation in a forum... New topics have dropped alarmingly and people are logging in less...

I actually think that people will start coming back when facebook starts charging for gallery and other bells and whistles...

Any thoughts?
