Commission instead of set ad price
« on: September 03, 2007, 03:50:19 pm »
I really like this hack but the one thing I would like to see is a setting so people could place ads for free and if the item sells then I'm paid a set commission percentage. I didn't see were this has been talked about or if it is in the works.

It is a good idea just not sure the best way to implement this.

After the bid is accepted the seller would be required to send a payment to the classifieds owner for commission. Problem is what if the seller never sends over the payment.

Another option would be the classifieds system would accept the payment thought the paypal account setup by the classifieds system. Then take a portion for commission and send the rest to the seller.
Downsides:
PayPal fees for the transactions
The main payment could be charged back and the classifieds owner can loose money.

If you have any other ideas let me know.

It would be great if we could accept the paypal payment through the classifieds like on ebay.

This may also help with the "Buy it Now" option if you could do it so the sale was not complete untill paypal payment was made.

The way that other Auction software works, is that commission is charged at set intervals:

Winning Bid Amount                      Success Fee
From Value     To Value
$0.01              $250.00                  5% of the Winning Bid Amount
$250.01           $5,000.00              $12.50 + 4% of the Winning Bid Amount over $250.00
$5,000.01         No Limit                 $202.50 + 3.5% of the Winning Bid Amount over $5,000.00

The initial listing fee is charged upfront and the commission fee is then invoiced to the seller and once paid, it is marked as paid

I could send you a link with admin passwords if you would like to see a working demo of a conventional auction site

That is something I thought about. But I could not think of a good way to force people to pay commission after an item has been sold

Not sure about the rest of you but I am willing to risk the collection of commissions in order to have a commission  payment feature put in place. We could always ban them if they don't pay the commission from listing their auctions.

I think I would get more folks to create auctions if they only had to pay if their auction was successful.

At the moment they are hesitant to pay a up front set fee and risk a unsuccessful auction.

I know this topic is old, but I'm just setting up the classifieds.
I want to implement the auction part as well but would like the option to charge for a percentage of the sale.
I don't mind charging a flat rate for smaller items but if I have an item worth thousands, I'd rather have a percentage. Couldn't the payment be made by Paypal to me, then I send the rest to the seller? Or somehow have it automatically deducted from the payment set to the seller?
If this can't be done, how does the Store work? Does it have a commission based system?
I really need both options, and need to find a way to charge commissions for auctions.

Commission would most likely need to be a second payment. Like I said before I did not like it beacuse it would be an hornor system. I would not suggest for the user to send you the full payment. Because if the charge fails or gets rejected you are out the money of the sale plus fees.

Store does not have a commission system it is meant for the Store Owner to sell their own products only..
