Can it handle this?
« on: December 22, 2007, 01:34:48 am »
Sorry if this seems redundant, but I'm having a difficult time mapping your brief "Features" list into my specific needs.  Part of the problem is that I'm having a tough time figuring out how a shopping cart gets integrated into a Forum.  I guess it would help to play with an Admin panel rather than just a few screenshots of product listing pages.  (Also, I'm new to SMF and the world of plugins and stuff associated with it.  Someone just suggested I come here and see if this will fit my needs.)

Here's what I need.

Say I've got a software product and it comes in three varieties.  For simplicity, we'll call them Basic, Pro, and Premiere.

Same product but an increasing number of features.

I need three Forums, one for each level, accessible to people with that level.  That is:

* Basic licensees get access to the Basic Forum
* Pro licensees get access to the Pro Forum
* Premiere licensees get access to the Premiere Forum

The shopping cart lets people buy whichever version they want.  When they do, it also gives them access  to a download area where they can download their product.  It also allows them to access their respective Forum.

They can also upgrade, so a Basic Licensee can upgrade to Pro or Premiere, and  a Pro can upgrade to Premiere.  They'd be given access to the Download section for that level as well as the Forum.

When they upgrade, they can be locked out of the earlier Download area, but can be left to access the earlier Forum.

When I have an update or something of interest to any of these three groups, I want to be able to post it to their downloads section and send an email to that group advising them of the new item.

Each Forum needs to have multiple sections: Overview, General Usage,  Q&A,  Problems/Bugs, etc.

I'd like to apply this same basic pattern to a number of separate products.  They'd all have unique domain names.  I don't want to have to buy a license for each domain.  (I use DLGuard right now, and while it's restricted to the domain on which it runs, it's not restricted to the number of domains that can sell products through it.)

Just a suggestion, but it would probably help your marketing efforts if you'd add some descriptions (more than bullet items) that describe usage models like this.  Or how people are using it.  Something like that.  In an area that's easy to find.  :)

Thanks for the help
-David

We have a demo of the store from a normal user's view found at

* Premiere licensees get access to the Premiere Forum

This can be done with SMF's permission system. Using the Store when someone buy's a product they can be auto assigned a membergroup from the forum.

This would require custom code currently with the store modification. In the store once someone buys an item they always have access to this item unless the download expires or is used up.

This can be done with the store when editing a product you can add additional downloads to that product. To notify the user's you would use the newsletter feature built into SMF.

The store modification is licensed for each install. For every forum that it is installed on it needs a valid license.

Any other questions let me know.

Ok, that helps a lot.  Thanks.

Does this come with full source code?  Or is it encoded somehow?  (ie., can I make custom mods myself, or do I have to hire you guys to do it for me?)  Perhaps that's an _option_ that could be added to upgrades?  (expire the old download area when the new one is enabled)  Sometimes it's helpful, and sometimes it's not.

The licensing model ... if I've got several products, then it would be most economical to put up a separate section on the same SMF installation for each product I suppose.

I don't know much about SMF yet, so ... is this even possible?  Can I have separate sections where there's a public forum and one or more restricted forums for product owners?

Also, do you have an affiliate program for sales of this script?

BTW, where it says "Hide email address from public?" in my profile settings, I've got it checked.  Yet the little envelope at the left has my mailto:.... info showing.  I realize this isn't related to your store, but ... what's it hiding exactly?  Or when?

Thanks

The store comes with full source code unencrypted which allows you to make modifications if needed.

Yes, you can you would need to create separate membergroups. Then give each membergroup permissions for each forum they can access.

Not currently.

Hides your email address from the public. Only yourself and forum admin's can see the email address.
