zero size thumbnails
« on: November 27, 2007, 04:10:16 pm »
I just got gallery pro working and noticed that when I add pictures a zero length thumbnail is created. As a result nobody can see any pictures anywhere in the gallery. I've tried copying the actual image to the thumbnail and then I can see the thumbnail. This tells me that the issue is with the thumbnail creation. Anyone have any ideas? The configuration is mostly as it was when I installed it.

Do you have GD installed?
This can be found under Support and Credits under the SMF version it normally lists the GD version.

I checked and the GD version shows up as bundled ( 2.0.34 compatible)

It is creating the thumb_ files and they are zero bytes?

Is it for all files png, jpg, gif?

Also make sure that the gallery folder permissions is 755 and check your forum's erorr log for any related errors

The thumbnail file is being created for at least jpgs and the thumbnail is of zero length.

So far I've only tried uploading jpgs and just a minute ago I tried uploading a few gifs. I'll loook for png  files and try uploading them. The thumbnails work for gif files though (at least the ones I tried) I will still need to get uploads working with jpgs though.

I didn't see anything in the error log that was related to the issue and the permissions on the directory look good. Remember the jpg gets put in the gallery directory and the thumbnail file gets created (being a zero length file in this case is irrelevant) so the the permissions allow the gallery software to write to the gallery directory.

Kind of odd if it works for gifs but not jpgs. Test it with png files as well.

I just created and uploaded a png image and it worked as well as gif. So far I'm only having problems with jpgs.

Taking matters into my own hands and suspicious of the GD that was included with the PHP source code I went ahead and downloaded the latest version of GD and recompiled  PHP to use it. Once I did that I noticed that not only did the thumbnails start working properly but so did other features of the smf forum that deals with jpgs.

It looks like the solution is not to use the bundled version of GD that comes with the PHP source!!
