recycle bin for completed ads
« on: April 29, 2008, 12:40:25 pm »
After seeing this http://www.smfhacks.com/index.php/topic,1467.0.html I thought that "completed" ads should be moved automatically to the recycle bin too!

You know, it's difficult to keep up with more than a thousand ads (that we have) and delete the completed ones manually! And still, they don't go to the recycle bin but are deleted permanently. The ideal would be: move the completed ones to the recycle bin automatically the moment that they are completed, and then leave them there for a few days for the members to see that it has completed and not disappeared. Then, they will be deleted permanently (automatically, manually, or with some SQL script)

Members by can't see the recycle bin only classifieds admins. I can add a feature to move the completed ones to the recycle bins.

I decided to leave completed ones there since it makes the classifieds look busy and helps get them listed into the major search engines.

Oops, I haven't realized it yet. I think that everyone should see the recycled ads (expired and completed), or else they will be searching all over and wondering if they are so stupid that can't find the ad or it disappeared. In either case, many of them will ask the admins/mods about the ad (which is very time consuming for the admins/mods)

I can add a feature to move the completed ones to the recycle bins.

Yes, please  :)

Our problem is that we are already too busy. At this moment there are 2400+ ads on two SMF sub-boards http://forum.kithara.gr/index.php?board=8 (and we delete manually the completed ones...)
We can't wait to move to the new classifieds space, which will be more organized and with less maintenance.

how do you you permanently delete expired listings that are in the recycle bin rather than going through the laborious method of one at a time?

Currently there is no way to do that but that is a good idea. I could add like checkboxes inside that page to mass delete them all.

You have to enable it under settings. But the downside when ever a listing expires or completed it is moved to the recycle bin.

Oh, I see.  Maybe later you could think about adding a way to delete only certain old listings.  I most likely will keep the HCS listings going as I renew my leases but in the future may need a way to delete abandoned listrings posted by others.

or can I already do this?  Haven't  thought about looking at this possibility till now.

just  curious

SMFHacks,
What about the idea that I wrote? "I think that everyone should see the recycled ads (expired and completed)". At least, tell me where the check for admin is, so that I can disable it by hand.

As I said, I could build and use an SQL script, to delete all or from a certain date and back, in phpMyAdmin.
Later, maybe SMFHacks will make it an option in the program ;)

The recycle bin is meant to be private in my mind. Maybe an option for the listing owner to see their expired listing?

In my opinion, if there should be an option, it should be to make the recycle bin public or private.
As I said, the visitors should be able to see if and when the listings that they were watching are completed or expired, so that they won't be searching in vain and asking the mods/admins.

OK, another choice would be to move the completed/expired listings automatically to the recycle bin only after a specified period of time (for example 7 days). In this way, these listings will remain in its category (and in the RSS feeds of the visitors) for a while more, and the recycle bin does not need to be public. Maybe this is more elegant...

In either case, what I would like is a way to mass-manipulate the completed/expired listings, automatically or manually (even if I have to use SQL & phpMyAdmin), because checking/moving/deleting one by one is driving us crazy.

If you do set up the classifieds to automatically go to the recycle bin, I hope you give us a choice option ,to keep this from happening. In some cases the expired, closed or completed ads need to stay in their original location, for those of us who don't want them to be relocated.

I use my classified listings for hunting leases, or hunt clubs, and these type listings get the bids cleared and restarted after each new year, or at the end of a contracts end date.

My clients browse these type listings, and anticipate when these listings will be reset after a contract ends, so my clients can bid on them again when a listing is reset to open status with a new end date.

There is already the option: 'Delete listings if they expire'...

Yes I know, I was just asking that if this gets changed that we still have the option to choose.
