Would it be possible to incorporate the number of daily comments posted in the Gallery with the number of posts made in the forum?

We have quite a few galleries and people tend to post their comments in the gallery rather than on the forum. This makes our daily post count very low and it sort of looks like the forum is "dead" because that post count is so low.

Also, is there any way to indicate on the gallery menu page when a new item has been posted in the gallery? As it is, we have to actually open each gallery and look inside to see.
