severe pixelation
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:36:09 am »
We just noticed a problem with our Gallery. When reinstalling the SMF Gallery Pro software, it will stop during the install and say there is a problem with one of the files.

The file in question is Subs-Graphics.php. I have attached the file for review if needed.

The affect this has is on the forum gallery. When uploading an image, the image will upload fine and looks as it should, but the thumbnail will be severely pixelated.

Here is a link to the Gallery so you can see an example of the problem.

We are running version 1.1.13 of the SMF software.

A bit of history...

Recently we had a problem with our SMF forum crashing. The host service tried replacing some of the forum files with originals to fix this problem.

The problem turned turned out to be a SQL error unrelated to any forum files, which was then fixed.

When we went back to the forums we noticed the Admin Gallery menu was missing, so we reinstalled the Gallery Pro software. This is when we noticed the file conflict with /Source/Subs-Graphics.php.

This makes me wonder if there's a conflict between the older files uploaded by the hosting service and some of the current files.

What is your jpeg compression value set in your gallery settings area?

It is set to 1. In the past I tried setting it to 0, but it defaults back to 1.

So strange it only occurs on thumbnails and not on the display image. So probably not a jpg compression setting issue anyway it seems, at least not the interface setting. But I agree, the thumbnails are being over compressed now on new image uploads for some reason.

The default for JPEG Compression Percent:  is 65
So yeah if is a low number that would look awful.
The higher the number the more space used but better image quality for jpegs.

Thanks. I am glad to say this fixed the problem. I believe I have had it set to 1 all this time, but for some reason there wasn't any problem prior to this. Anyway, glad to see it has been resolved. That is the main thing. Thanks again.
