Does re-size feature delete original image?

I see that there is an automatic image resize upon upload feature.

When the photo is resized, does it replace the original image in the server file or does it just add the resized image in addition to the original image?

I found that with this feature before, the original wasn't replaced, thus compouding my server disc space usage.  I had to go into the files directly and manually delete all the original images.  That was a real PITA!
