3 column theme?

How would I be able to add 2 or 3 columns to the default smf theme?  Do I need to download an entirely new theme?  If so where would I find this?

...And is there a mod for inserting modules within these columns?

Are you using Tiny Portal?

If not then get TP and it will most likely solve your problem.
