Yes just make the thumbnail width and height the same.
Then you can use the rebuild thumbnail option to make them the same for each image.

If I do that SMFhacks, thumbnails are resized to fit at the best in those dimensions but not cropped to be square.

For instance if I have a 1000*655 px original picture, the thumbnail will be 200*133 px (if I choose 200 as the max value W and H for thumbnails).

I tried again and it doesn't work : if you look at the example, you'll see that with a 200*200 value as max dimensions, the thumbnails are not square.

Is there anything which can be done for that ?
Or maybe this would be a feature in the next release ?

I don't think so. I use the createthumbnail function built into SMF. Which allows a max width/height but I do not think it can force it if it is smaller.

Yes, and it won't create a square thumbnail from a 16:9 photo too.
