Brand new SMF Gallery user - Pro license paid up!
« on: April 03, 2014, 10:33:44 am »
So - first and foremost - nice Gallery.  I liked it so much in 5 minutes after installing the Lite version I ponied up the $50 for the Pro.

Like some have been getting for years it seems, on some pic uploads I get "Not a valid picture file."

The file is a picture taken by a Sony a55 DSLR.  I took it.  3.75MB, 4912 x 3264 px JPG format file.

Too big to upload here, so I'm looking for some suggestions.  I have PHP5-GD on my server (VPS at Linode).

Some pics work, some don't.  If I use the Image Resizer in Windows 7, the resulting image can be uploaded.

Now, it might be the size.  In looking at my Settings, I have the default 5000000 bytes as the max size (5MB if I'm not mistaken).

But, the fixed PHP settings are:

PHP: Upload Max Filesize   2M
PHP: Post Max Filesize   8M

Does this mean we can't upload larger than 2MB files?  A more descriptive error than "Not a valid picture file." would be helpful.

Yep - figured it out with some Google magic.  Upped the file limit to 10MB and post to 100MB but will likely pull that back a bit.  Now it works no problem.

When the file size limit in the Gallery settings is lower than the PHP limit, you get the proper 'file is too big' error.

You might consider setting the default file size limit to either the same/lower than the default 2M PHP limit or use the PHP limit your software gathers from PHP to set the default size.  When your settings are higher than PHP's, you get the vague error message.

The upload post size and upload file size should normally be the same. Since uploads are post requests.
That way the file will be uploaded without having to worry about the values matching.

Will think about lowering the default filesize. Strange in this day that the default php settings is very low at 2mb

Yup - it's that low.

BTW - would be an awesome feature if image uploads done through SMF somehow landed in the Gallery and in the posts were replaced with the BBC code link.

..and I can't find a setting to 'auto approve' comments.  I don't want to have to approve comments all the time.

It is a membergroup level setting -> Admin -> Permissions -> modify membergroup  then it is a permission under SMF Gallery
