Author Topic: Tried searching for answer - changing folder where images are stored  (Read 2950 times)

I set the Gallery up with the defaults.  I note that the images and thumbnails are being stored in the root 'gallery' folder itself.  I assumed there would be a sub directory to house the actual image files, keeping them away from some of the other files like index.php, some of the source images etc.

Oh, and what is the SMFGallery3.7.zip file doing in the Gallery folder?  I presume I don't need it there.

Anyhow - can I simply move the image files to a new directory and update the Gallery Path and Gallery URL?  Is the Gallery Path where the images are stored, and the Gallery URL where the source files need to remain?

The gallery folder will store all the images/ fullsize, medium size/thumbnail size by default. If you have the option to store in multifolders then the gallery creates a folder for every one thousand images by default such as /gallery/1/ /gallery/2/ etc

SMFGallery3.7.zip does not need to be in the gallery folder should never be there.

The gallery url and path can be changed under gallery configuration. Just make sure to rename your gallery folder to the new name that you want to use.

If you want to use a folder called images instead for example you would set the gallery url to http://www.yoursite.com/images/
And the gallery path would be changed from /home/public_html/gallery/ to  /home/public_html/images/

And after I change the folder name in the settings / create it, I can move existing images and thumbnails to it without any further changes?

Yes that should be it. Just make sure that new folder has writable permissions.

So it all worked out OK - moved the images, CHMOD the new folders/files to 755, no problems.

But, the Gallery / Category Thumbnails are not working.  I've tried resetting them with no luck from the image viewing screen where you can set the image as the Category Thumbnail.  It doesn't throw an error, but it doesn't work.

When I go into Edit of a Gallery, I see a red warning - Warning Gallery Category Image Path is not writable! /srv/www/dotheton.com/public_html/gallery/catimgs

Now, it is absolutely writeable.  I've done it through FileZilla, I've CHMOD'd it in Putty to 755, the owner/group are www-data/www-data - it's all as it should be.

Suggestions?  Gallery works, I can upload pics, they get thumbnails, but the Gallery and Category thumbnails can't be created.

Check your forum error log for clues might give the path issue or error message.

Also if you moved the folder would the path be different other than /gallery/catimgs ? I would also check that the folder has the exact same permissions as the folder that the images that can be uploaded. And that the group is the same for both.

UGH I feel dumb - I assumed, wrongly, that the folder configuration in the Settings area of the Gallery was specific to the storage of images, not the rest of the folders and files needed.

So, I copied all the other files and folders over from the original gallery folder created during installation to my new folder.

I wanted it outside my main 'forum' directory so I can easily backup the forum itself, without necessarily backing up the gallery content.  Ultimately there may be many GB's of image files that I don't want to back up on a regular basis whereas I back my forum code up daily, before and after each Mod etc.

So - now that I've copied over the entire content of the original Gallery folder, as in

catimgs
css
fonts
ftp
fupload
images
import
js
notes

along with

index.php
FacebookShare.png
lighter.png
rss.png
mature.gif

Do I need the original Gallery folder inside the Forum folder?

My Gallery Path, Gallery URL, Batch Add Path all point to the new gallery folder in my root domain directory.

Gallery Path /srv/www/dotheton.com/public_html/gallery/
Gallery URL http://www.dotheton.com/gallery/
Batch Add /srv/www/dotheton.com/public_html/gallery/ftp/

To do the backup plan you are wanting to do you will need to either create a new subdomain for pictures or have another directory path is accessible to the web.
The gallery path must be able to be fetched via the web since that is where the pictures are stored and will be pulled from.

The new gallery folder should contain all the files that were in the original gallery folder.
All the paths below should be updated to the new gallery path and the gallery url should reflect the location of the gallery path.
Gallery Path /srv/www/dotheton.com/public_html/gallery/
Gallery URL http://www.dotheton.com/gallery/
Batch Add /srv/www/dotheton.com/public_html/gallery/ftp/
