Categories / Galleries
« on: September 01, 2016, 02:07:16 pm »
Is there a difference between Category and Gallery. It seems they are being used interchangeably?

Also, what would be the reason for me not to be able to delete a Category / Gallery as the admin?

Thanks.

EDIT: Attached a screenshot

Why can't I delete 'Test'?

A Category holds all pictures. A personal gallery holds user pictures which can have multiple categories inside it.

Test is was probably called member galleries and that is the placeholder to hold personal gallerys for members.
If you don't want the member gallery category to appear. Disable it under gallery settings.

I'll be honest, that doesn't make total sense to me.

That makes it sound like in the heirarchy, It's Categories > Gallery

But then there can be categories in galleries?

And by member, do you mean user?

By member I mean user

There are two types of galleries.
The main level galleries created by the gallery admins which the users can upload pictures to.
The other type is usergalleries/personal galleries if the usergroup has the personal gallery permission they can create their own mini gallery which they can create categories in there like the admin does it the main gallery categories that they create.

I cannot imagine how I can't delete this.

I've uninstalled, deleted the package, deleted files, and cannot get that thing to be gone.

If I want upload a picture, I cannot even select that as a category.

Under Admin -> Gallery Configuration -> Settings -> Layout
"Show user gallery category on gallery index" uncheck and Save

Yeah, that worked I guess, but ultimately isn't that hiding it?

Why can't it be removed entirely......

Because it is used to hold member galleries/give a link to access a list of all member's personal galleries and it acts as a normal category in other aspects.

A category  holds images.

A gallery is a collection of categories.

So a gallery is essentially an album within an album? / or a folder within a folder - that sort of thing?

Not really.

Category holds pictures. A category can have a sub categories underneath it.

A gallery holds many categories. We have one main gallery which has all admin created categories. Then users have personal galleries which have their own categories they create.

For example. member galleries.  Each user can create their own mini gallery and have any number of categories and subcategories inside it.

I see. I think.  Not sure my members will.  It seems that sometimes bulk upload shows, and sometimes not - depending on how they accesss their gallery.

Can I create default user gallery categories and sub-categories so each user has say

member gallery
 - my bikes
 - my trips
 - miscellaneous
