Turn off Download Stats?
« on: October 15, 2018, 11:51:43 am »
Just installed the free version 3.0.4 on SMF 2.0.15.

Is there a way to turn off the Download Stats? I'm hoping to have a purely generic downloads page with no puffery at all. This is a help desk site with no forum.

I have no prob buying the pro version but I didn't see anything in the docs to indicate that the stats could be turned off.

It is not a setting to turn off. But you can edit the downloads2.template.php and remove the link.

What is your use case? A help site with downloads?

What is your use case? A help site with downloads?

The site is running SMF and SimpleDesk, with the message forum and everything else turned off. No user list or personal messages available to users. A pure help desk only site running since the initial releases of SimpleDesk. (I'm SimpleDesk beta tester from early on) The majority of our users probably don't even know what an internet message forum is.

I've been managing it for the last several years and was recently asked if I could provide the ability to allow users of a particular membergroup to download files without them being able to share the URL link to the file with non-members. Thus the need for something like Download System.

After looking at the security method in Downlaod System I'm a little worried that it's a DENY based setting and not a PERMIT based setting. For example....

Member Groups:
MemberGroup1
MemberGroup2

File Download Areas:
Files for MemberGroup1
Files for MemberGroup2

If I want users in MemberGroup1 to not see files in download area "Files for MemberGroup2" then I have to deny them access.

But what happens if I have a user who is legitimately a member of MemberGroup1 and MemberGroup2 and I want them to have access to both download areas? Does this mean I'm going to have to setup new membergroups, one for every possible combination of membergroups?

Thanks,

Paul

I will test that case and see what happens. It is more of a deny based system. Will check.

For:  MemberGroup1 and MemberGroup2

Tested with a user whos primary group was group 1 and secondary group 2. Currently the deny's override any allow access. And they would not be able to access either category.

Thanks for doing the legwork on that permissions issue. I appreciate it.

It looks like I'll be making the purchase of Downloads System Pro, despite the headache I may end up with regarding the DENY based permissions. :)

As I recall we purchased the Knowledgebase license before. Basically it was the right to remove the copyright that we bought. I think I had my boss go to the link and make the purchase himself.

I'm assuming we can strip any copyrights from the purchased version of Downloads System Pro?

There is an extra fee for the copyright removal but can include if your purchase.

I do take in feature requests/ideas and do make updates to the script when I have time.

If I install the free version and use it to setup rights and download categories, can I then uninstall the free version and install Pro over it and not lose any ground?

Thanks. I'll try installing it on the live server and see how it integrates. The DENY based security paradigm may be tricky for me to get around.

Let me know how it goes. I did deny base permissions due to two things one assuimg most categories will be open by default, and second if a new usergroup is added you do not have to readd access to each category.
